The Semester Project ● Radical is a speculative design project. The research-oriented, experimental approach extrapolates current developments and outlines possible futures. Critical questions are raised that can be used as a specific basis for discussion. Future impacts of our current actions should be discussed before they occur.

The scenario: ● Radical is a complete diet in form of a pill. It differs from existing nutritional powders in one crucial point: in addition to nutrition intake it also focuses on self-optimization through neuro-enhancement. With ● Radical, both the performance and the physical and mental well-being of the consumer are increased to the optimum.

The work addresses the tension between people distinguishing them self through special dietary habits, the elevation of certain foods to lifestyle products, and the significance of nutrition intake in today’s capitalist performance-oriented society. The design therefore moves between laboratory, lifestyle, and sci-fi aesthetics. The materials and color scheme appear hygienic and sterile. ● Radical pushes nutrition trends to the extreme and raises cultural-sociological and socio-political questions such as: What influences our eating habits? What does nutrition mean? What is the significance of the act of nutrition intake in our society today?

The work was created in the class of Prof. Dr. Anke Haarmann and was exhibited as part of the Master Class in April 2017 at the Westwerk in Hamburg.
